US Congressman. A lawyer, he was admitted to the Illinois State Bar Association in 1861. After the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army, and was commissioned as Major, Field and Staff, 123rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry on September 6, 1862. He served through the end of the war, was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers, and was honorably mustered out on June 28, 1865. After the war he served in the Illinois State Legislature, and was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 17th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1885 to 1889.
