U.S. Congressman. Successful in agricultural pursuits, he was member of the Board of Supervisors of Sangamon County, (1877-78), a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives, (1882-86) and served in the Illinois State Senate, (1890-94). In addition, he was president of the Caldwell State Bank of Chatham and president of the Farmers’ National Bank of Springfield, (1885-98). In 1899, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth, Fifty-seventh and Fifty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1905 and reelected to the Sixtieth Congress, serving (1907-09). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in the banking business until his death at age 76.
