Carolyn Wells

Carolyn Sue Wells was born on November 1, 1950, to her loving parents, Ben and Lucy Hamilton at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee, Illinois. Carolyn grew up in Otto, Illinois, where she developed relationships that lasted a lifetime. Very early on her parents instilled in her the necessity of a meaningful relationship with the Lord, and she accepted Christ at a young age.

Carolyn loved sharing stories from her childhood, like raising a pig with her big sister, Bennett; seeing her aunt fail at ringing the neck of a chicken; walking from Otto to Kankakee with her friends; and listening to her dad and his brothers play guitar and sing. Her parents also taught her the value of an education and Carolyn graduated from Clifton Central High School in 1968.

On September 19, 1970, Carolyn married Eugene Wells at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Otto, Illinois. From their union were born two children Erica and Shannon whom she loved beyond measure. While she only had two children biologically, she was a mother to many children in the community and would care for and feed anyone who needed it.

Carolyn was a devoted member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and she instilled her love of God in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Carolyn loved to cook and found joy in seeing others enjoy her food. She and her crew would host an occasional dinner dance and, at one point, they had a catering business. In addition to cooking, Carolyn also loved to travel and to shop. She enjoyed trying different perfumes as well; we’ll all miss the smell of White Diamonds and Narcisse.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Lucy Hamilton; her sisters, Bennett Hamilton and Rosa Lee Johnson; and her brothers Henry and Jerry Hamilton.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 49 years Eugene Wells of Kankakee, Illinois; her son, Shannon Wells of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; her daughter Erica Wells-Campbell of Kankakee, Illinois; four grandchildren Charris (Jasmine) Wells, of Bethalto, Illinois, Brandi Wells, Andrew Campbell, Jr. both of Kankakee, Illinois, and Camille Wells of Brownville, New Jersey; two great-grandchildren Reign and Ryan Finch. two sisters Tracy Hamilton-Creighton of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Dorothy Hamilton-McCray of Atlanta, Georgia; a host of nieces and nephews; and a group of friends that were more like sisters.
