Brother of poet Walt Whitman. Much of Whitman's book "Passage to India" celebrates the highly publicized work of engineers, especially the suggestive global linking accomplished by the transcontinental railroad, the Suez Canal, and the Atlantic cable. Whitman's enthusiasm for engineering accomplishments was magnified because of his pride in his brother Jeff, who had moved west in 1867 to become chief engineeer charged with building and overseeing waterworks for St. Louis. Walt exclaimed that it was "a great work--a noble position."
