Peggy Akers Mitchell was born in Alexandria, Louisiana on January 20,1945, and grew up in Beaumont, Texas where she was baptized at Sunlight Baptist Church at an early age. She earned her undergraduate degree at Southern University and obtained her Doctor of Education Degree from University of Houston-Clear Lake.

Peggy worked as a life-long educator in Galveston, Gladewater and Dallas Texas. She served as a teacher at Ball High School, Dean of Instruction at Skyline High School, Assistant Principal at South Oak Cliff and Samuel High School and went on to become a Principal at Hulcy Middle School. Peggy is the loving mother of Edward Mitchell III of Dallas, TX, William (Karen) Mitchell of Houston, TX and Shani Mitchell of DeSoto, TX.

She is survived by 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild in addition to her siblings Jeridine Tuck, Minnie Johnson, Velma Akers, Katie Akers, Billie Daniels, and Horace “Rocky” Akers III.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Zadie Akers, and father, Horace Akers Jr.

Her passions were her students and their education. Her success was a result of her high energy, determination and drive to bring out the best in everyone. Peggy was a champion of the impossible. In many cases throughout her career, she was asked to take on the historically challenging opportunities. And challenge was always accepted.

She was not only able to improve the school scores but also influence the teachers and students under her administration. After retirement she continued her mission to ensure children had a quality education by developing training programs for active teachers. As she would say, she was “teaching teachers how to teach.”

Peggy was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. In her years she had an entrepreneurial spirit which she used as a seamstress and published writer. Peggy went home to be with the Lord on July 1, 2020. Please join us in celebrating her life Monday, July 6, 2020, at 12 Noon at Laurel Land Funeral Home located at 6300 S R L Thornton Fwy, Dallas, TX 75232.
