Mary Gregg was born in New Jersey and was the daughter of George Gregg and Elizabeth Hanby Gregg. It is believed that She married Abner Howell circa 1770, in Pennsylvania. They emigrated down the Ohio River, then settled on 100 acres on Locust Creek in Bracken County, Kentucky. Abner died there in 1797. He was a soldier of the War of Independence. Mary is listed on the Bracken County, Kentucky Tax List in 1799.

She came to Franklin County, Indiana, from Kentucky, circa 1812, with her daughter Rhoda and son in law Job Stout. She was a member of the Big Cedar Baptist Church.
