Glenn Allen Scharp LUBBOCK-Glenn Allen Scharp passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016. We will gather for fellowship and remembrance from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life of 91 years on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Melonie Park Church. Glenn was born at home on the farm in Iroquois County, IL, to Grace Johnson Scharp and Conrad August (Coonie) Scharp on March 8, 1925. Glenn attended school in Danforth and graduated from Gilman High School. Glenn graduated from the University of Illinois, Champagne Urbana with a BS in Electrical Engineering and later earned a MS in Computer Programming from the University of Utah. He lived in California, Utah, Maryland, Colorado, and Texas, serving his country in various positions. He was in the Army Air Corps as a bombardier. He worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, Dugway Proving Ground in Utah, and in Colorado Springs, CO, at Cheyenne Mountain. To the amusement of his coworkers, Glenn would fly his plane to work every morning while working at Dugway. While living in California, Glenn learned to ski and became so proficient he taught skiing for many years. Glenn worked closely with the U.S. Ski Team and developed a program that helped their performance. While living in Maryland, he belonged to the Baltimore Ski Club. It was on a Baltimore Ski Club trip to Snowshoe, West Virginia, where he met his future bride, Gwen Flache. They were married on May 24, 1980. They moved to Texas, but continued their love for skiing by traveling all over the world, including South America, Europe, and Glenn's favorite ski spot which was Zurs, Austria. Glenn and Gwen have traveled to all 50 states and all seven continents. Glenn has had a lifelong love of barbershop singing. As a youngster, he and his younger brother, Rick and his sister, Irmajean sang in three-part harmony and appeared on the first TV broadcast of Chicago's Major Bowes Amateur Hour. Throughout his life, he participated in choruses in California, Texas, and Colorado. He was a long time member of Melonie Park Church. He was a man of great faith and prayer who loved and followed Jesus. Glenn is preceded in death by his parents, and his older brother, Melvin Scharp. He is survived by his wife, Gwen Scharp of Lubbock; his brother, Rick Scharp of Utah; his sister, Irmajean Mendoza of Riverside, CA; and his beloved nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Melonie Park Church or a charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank the great caregivers who assisted Glenn.
