Dennis Irvin Stewart, 71, of Tyler, Texas passed away peacefully on Friday, July 3, 2020, at HomePlace Hospice of East Texas after battling a lengthy illness. His final days were spent surrounded by those closest to him, and family and friends who gathered outside of his window daily.

Dennis was born on November 25, 1948 to Milton Irvin Stewart and Minnie Evelyn (Coker) Stewart. He was raised in Waco, Texas and graduated from Richfield High School. He moved to Tyler and attended Tyler Junior College, worked at La Gloria Oil and Gas Company and eventually started his own business, Tyler Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. He spent a lot of his years working on different rose nurseries around the Tyler area.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dennis was an avid hunter and fisherman from an early age and he absolutely loved the outdoors. He spent many hunting trips all over Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. His love and knowledge of firearms was impeccable. He was a great welder, blacksmith, a great outdoor cook, he was a great shot at trap and skeet shooting and was involved in many shooting competitions. You could usually find him just tinkering in his shop listening to his favorite music, The Beach Boys and Frank Sinatra. He was a member and past Master of St. John’s Masonic Lodge #53 in Tyler for many years and Hyland-Jarmon Lodge #113 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He also held memberships with York Rite Bodies in Tyler and Veritas Council of Knight Masons in Tyler. He was also a member of Sons of the Confederate Veterans and a member of The Amateur Trapshooting Association. Dennis was an old soul who helped the elderly and volunteered his time when needed, but never wanted any recognition. Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Judith Ann (Fleming), daughter and son-in-law Stacy Michele and Stan McCurley of Poynor, and son Joe Trace Stewart of Tyler, and two granddaughters who called him “Grandad Dennis”, MeriClaire and Mollee McCurley of Poynor.

Visitation will be held at Jackson's Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home on Thursday, July 9, 2020 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm as a come and go. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2020 at 11:00am at Pine Springs Baptist Church. Per the Governor’s orders, a mask must be worn by everyone at the visitation and Memorial Service. A private graveside will be held at Pine Springs Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials in honor of Dennis Irvin Stewart may be made to a Masonic Lodge of your choice or The Hospice of East Texas Foundation. A special thank you to all of his caregivers over the past 8 months. He knew how to charm the nurses at Mother Frances, and he had wonderful nurses, Edgar & Janice at Park Place. By the grace of God, he had the most compassionate Dr. at Hospice, who also just happened to be one of his friends for many years, Dr. Royal Becker.
