Patricia Jane Cousins Nickels
October 14, 1927 ~ April 18, 2018 (age 90)

Patricia Jane Cousins Nickels passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 18, 2018. She was born October 14, 1927, to Eugene Augustus and Queenie Easby Cousins in Detroit, Michigan. She was the third of three daughters who remained close for all their lives even though geographical distances kept them apart.

Pat graduated from Cooley High School, Detroit, in 1945, and then attended Kalamazoo College and the University of Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1949. While working at Hearne Brothers (Mapmaking), she met Frederick Ellis Nickels of Ann Arbor on a blind date! They married on June 2, 1951, and remained a loving couple for over 66 years.

After marrying Fred she devoted her life to raising four children and volunteering at various Ann Arbor and University of Michigan organizations. She was an active member of Embroiders’ Guild chapters in both Michigan and Florida, making many beautiful needlepoint and cross-stitched pieces for her family. She loved gardening, both vegetables and flowers, and enjoyed hosting lobster parties in the summer and apple cider-making weekends in the fall. She also embraced new technology and loved to research and use the latest gadgets.

Her easy smile and loving nature will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by four children, son Kenneth Nickels and wife, Susan, of Iowa City, daughter Rebecca Nickels of Canton, Michigan, daughter Sandra Rose and husband Paul of Shepherd, Michigan; and son Daniel Nickels and wife, Kelly, of Belleville, Michigan. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Katherine Kirchner (Scott), Benjamin Nickels (Stacey), Anna Rose, Margaret Rose, Jessica Nickels, and Tara Nickels. She is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren, Madeline Jo Kirchner, Nolan Ellis Kirchner, Kipton Ellis Nickels and Braelyn Elizabeth Nickels.

She was preceded in death by sisters Katherine Roberta Gast and Annette Beryl Bonzelaar.

The family would like to give our sincere appreciation to the many staff members of McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital, Dr. Paul Blanchard, Bondy Physical Therapy, Laurus Home Care and Independence Village of Petoskey. We would also like to thank our in-home care individuals Kelli, Mary, Ann Marie and Alice. We are forever grateful for their kind, caring and dedicated service.

A memorial service will be held at Independence Village at 11:00am on Saturday, May 12, 2018 and will be immediately followed by a celebration reception at Independence Village. In accordance with her wishes, a private family memorial service will be held this summer at the family farm in Alanson, Michigan.
