  • Burial Burley, Cassia County, Idaho, USA

Elsie graduated from Milligan, CO High School in ~1926-27. In the 1930's her parents, she and five younger brothers moved to a farm south of Burley, ID via train and car. She married Charles W. Allen in 1935 and shortly after they became a farming couple in the View area. Even though Charles was the farmer, for about four decades Elsie was in close support on his side. She gave leadership to the raising of two sons, Gene and Dean, cared for the garden, prepared three meals per day, frequently attended to milking the cows and feeding the livestock while doing other odd jobs like driving derrick during hay season. Her role in support of the expanding farm enterprise was significant. However, Elsie was most critical as the "social chair" of the Allen family. She was the one who brought cold Kool-Aid and sandwiches for the family to enjoy at lunch under the Willow tree in the middle of the farm, the one who planned the weenie roasts in Howell Canyon, the visits with nearby relatives in summer evenings, the one who planned the winter dances in the haymow of the barn, and who planned the card parties for adults and fun evenings for kids in the yard under the pole light! It is really amazing how much the role of mothers and times have changed for children and adults since the 1940's and 50's! During the 1960-70's after both sons left home for college and their careers, Elsie and Charles gave increased focus to their registered Angus herd and what was now the Snow View Angus Ranch. With their prize-winning cattle they enjoyed the shows, sales and friendships of fellow cattlemen. This continued until the early 1970's when the herd and ranch had to be dispersed because of a serious injury Charles suffered in a motorcycle accident. They retired to Farmer's Corner south of Burley where they became avid gardeners and enjoyed some travel during their twilight years. Elsie thrived on company and the interaction with relatives and friends. She was a long-standing member of Claremont Grange, Ruth Rebekah Lodge and as a Blue Lady Volunteer at the Burley Hospital.
