She was the youngest of seven children born to Jennie and Richard Updike. She was a graduate of Redlands High School, class of 1955. She was a member of the “Temple Bells," an acapella group from Temple Baptist Church. She married Melvin Parks September 1956 in Redlands. She and her husband purchased their home in Sunnymead in 1967 (now Moreno Valley) where they had a cactus nursery. They were involved in the Gates Cactus Club for many years and she served as secretary of the club. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Melvin.
