Corporal Wyndham Randolph Carper was born in Gala, Botetourt County, Va. on November 12, 1840.

His parents were Joseph VanMeter Carper (1812-1864) and mother was Anna Maria Grymes West (1814-1887).

While a cadet at Virginia Military Institute, he enlisted in Company D "The Fincastle Rifles" of the 11th Va. Infantry Regiment on April 23, 1861. The Fincastle Rifles was one of the first units to enter the service from this county. George M. Carper and Dr. Robert B. Carper also enlisted on the same date. John Carper and Dr. Robert Carper would die from wounds received at the battle of Williamsburg in May of 1862.

Wyndham served through the four years of war. He was wounded three times, twice at Gettysburg, and during one of the battles around Richmond.

Wyndham Carper was absent due to sickness in January and February of 1863. He was wounded in the head during Pickett's charge at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. He returned to duty and was shown on the muster report of September-October, 1863.

He was promoted to Corporal on December 20, 1863.
Wyndham avoided capture on April 1, 1865 at Five Forks and again on April 6, 1865 at Sayler's Creek.
Wyndham and his brother George M.Carper surrendered on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House.

He returned to Botetourt County, Virginia.
He married Elizabeth Jane "Jennie" Buhrman on August 13, 1871 in Botetourt County, Va.

He became a farmer and filled positions of trust in the county. For about 40 years he was a member of the county school board. He was a member of Galatia Presbyterian Church for many years and was regarded as a leader in community interests.

Wyndham and Jennie had 5 children: Joseph Buhrman Carper; Wyndham Taylor Carper; Mary St. George Carper; Robert William Carper; and Bessie Rosser Carper.

Jennie Buhrman Carper passed away on Dec. 15, 1890.

Afterwards, Wyndham Carper married Nannie McFerran Woltz.

He died at his home on July 26, 1925 after an illness of several months at the age of 84 years, 8 months, and 14 days.

He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters, and also by a sister.

The funeral was held at Galatia Presbyterian Church and was attended by one of the largest assemblages of neighbors and friends known in the community for many years. The active pallbearers were his nephews.
The Julia Jackson Chapter, U. D. C. placed flags and flowers upon the grave of this beloved patriot.
