William Lee Amoss was the son of Garrett & Ruth Amoss of Mt. Soma Farm in Benson, Harford County, Md.

Mr. William Lee Amoss was appointed in June 1896 to be the first Director of the Farmers' Institute of The Maryland Agricultural College (now the University of Maryland). Mr. Amoss retained that position until September 30, 1910.

Mt. Soma Farm is one of the old Harford homesteads. Here in the family burying ground is the grave of William Amos, dated 1750. Tradition has it that he came to America from England to escape the wrath of his stepmother and was the first Amos that came to this country. The name of Mt. Soma Farm was found by the present occupant, William Lee Amoss, by spelling backwards the family name and leaving off the double S, which came into the family by choice of the representative of the fourth generation....(The Aegis & Intelligencer, Bel Air, Md, Dec 29, 1905, p. 3)

Suddenly, on December 11, 1933, at his residence, Mount Soma, Benson, Harford County, Md., WILLIAM LEE, aged 74, beloved husband of the late Sarah E. Amoss (nee Breed).
Funeral services Friends Meeting House, Fallston, Md., on Wednesday, December 13, at 2 p.m. Interment in adjoining cemetery. (Baltimore Sun, Dec 12, 1933)
