Dr. Mike Hackler attended Port Allen High, where he graduated in 1965 with the modest acclamations of valedictorian, Student Body president, football team captain and Most Valuable Athlete. Dr. Mike Hackler attended LSU, graduating in 1970, with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering with the titles of Student Body president of the College of Engineering, Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges & Universities, top 3 percent of engineering students, and a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
Dr. Mike Hackler furthered his education at the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport; graduating in the top 25 percent of his class in June 1977. During this time, Dr. Mike Hackler was junior and senior class president and recipient of the True Grit Award. Dr. Mike Hackler completed a five-year (July 1, 1997-June 30, 1982) internship and residency at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine at Richland Memorial Hospital in general surgery. Then followed with a two-year fellowship (July 1, 1982-June 30, 1984) in cardiovascular surgery at the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences.
Dr. Mike Hackler served his duty in the Louisiana National Guard from Nov. 23, 1970, to Dec. 1, 1977, where he completed basic training, advanced training, commission via Officer Candidate School and officer training. Dr. Mike Hackler was a member of the American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, Louisiana State Medical Society, East Baton Rouge Parish Medical Society, Baton Rouge Surgical Association, Baton Rouge Cardiovascular Society, Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Heart Association to name a few. Dr. Mike Hackler had been an elder and prominent member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Mike Hackler was diagnosed with mesothylioma (cancer of the lungs and abdomen) in November 2005. Having received a prognosis of three months, Dr. Mike Hackler fought and outlived many people (and expert's) expectations, although facing many obstacles. Dr. Mike Hackler's life and fight for life has been an inspiration to many.
Dr. Mike Hackler is survived by his wife, Frances Kean-Hackler; daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Mackie Wall; daughter, Jennifer Hackler; son, Michael G. Hackler; two grandchildren, Jackson and Ella Wall; siblings and their spouses, Jerry and Pat Hackler, Jean and Jesse Constantine, Ed and Marian Hackler and Sue and Dean Mayers; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family sends their sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Gerald Miletello and all the staff of Our Lady of the Lake Oncology Unit and Cancer Center for their care and comfort.
