U.S. Congressman. He attended Augusta College Kentucky, (1833-34) and engaged in commercial business in St. Louis, Missouri, (1838-60). Moving to Louisiana, after the Civil War, he engaged in manufacturing and was the first president of the Louisiana Sugar Exchange in New Orleans. In 1885, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth, Fiftieth and Fifty-first Congresses and served until his death at age 73. U.S. Senator Edward James Gay, was his grandson.
