At his death, Collins was the oldest thirty-third degree Mason in the United States. This last degree is only conferred in recognition of capable service in behalf of the order & in recognition of a life that is exemplary of the high principles & purposes of the society. Mr. Collins was also dean of the Supreme Council of the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite at Washington & sovereign grand inspector for Missouri. Appointed collector of water rates in 1872 by St. Louis Mayor Tom Brown, Collins originated a system of collecting revenue which was so successful that he was reappointed by two successive mayors--a rare feat in municipal affairs. In 1864 Mr. Collins turned his attention to the life insurance business & later extended his efforts to the field of fire insurance, becoming agent for some of the largest companies on the continent. Martin Collins, Son & Company became recognized as one of the most important in insurance circles in the country.
