Mr. Carruth earned a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Mississippi State University. He began his career as an engineer for the Mississippi State Highway Department in 1932. In 1939, he began work for the federal government on national defense projects, and was superintendent of construction on the Huntsville, AL Arsenal and on Redstone Ordinance Depot in Anniston, AL. He was employed by Harbert & Cargile Inc. in Mobile, AL from 1942-1945 as construction superintendent on various defense projects. In 1945, he began Carruth Construction Company with headquarters in McComb. He served as city engineer for McComb and county engineer for numerous Mississippi counties until 1982. He served as chairman of the board of First Bank of McComb and was a director until 2002. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where he was chairman of the board of trustees and taught Sunday school for many years. He established a scholarship at Millsaps College in his parents' memory. First Bank of McComb established a scholarship in his honor at Mississippi State University on his 90th birthday.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Marguerite "Beanie" Bean Carruth, who he married on October 5, 1935; his parents, Joseph E. Carruth, Sr. and Bertha Felder Carruth; and three brothers, James Carruth, the Rev. Edward Carruth and Dr. Bruce Carruth.

He was survived by two daughters, Mary Linda Carruth Purtle and husband Glynn of Wichita Falls, TX, and Robin Dare Carruth Turner and husband Joe Ben of Knoxville, TN; 3 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
