Military honors will be under the auspices of the Oregon Military Honors Team. Viewing and visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 20 at Dunes Memorial Chapel.

Melvin was born April 27, 1930 in Toledo, Ore., to David J. and Mary (Friesen) Brooks. He went to heaven June 17, 2017 from his home surrounded by his family.

He was raised and educated in Toledo having graduated from high school in 1949. In 1951 he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He moved to Klamath Falls and graduated from Oregon Institute of Technology in 1956 with his degree in horology (the science of timekeeping).

Mel relocated to Merced, Calif., area where he raised his three sons. He owned and operated several businesses including a jewelry store, laundromat, a service station, rental units, real estate sales and some farming. In giving the glory to the Lord, Mel was blessed with a great deal of success.

Mel's greatest love was for the Lord. He loved to tell others about Jesus and what the Lord had done in his life. He enjoyed running and later walking on the beach. He collected sand dollars and made gifts from them to give to others. He was always a very loving and generous man. His utmost prayer is for all his friends and family to join him someday in heaven. He loved his family and friends very much.

Mel relocated to Reedsport where he purchased a home up on a hill where he had a beautiful view of Reedsport. He has continued to tell his friends about the blessings of the Lord. He was always looking for new challenges and life was good.

Mel is survived by his three sons, Melvin Richard Brooks Jr and wife, Isamara, David John Brooks and wife, Ann , and Robert Lee Brooks and wife, Judith; one brother, Loyal G. Brooks; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mel was preceded in death by two brothers, Roland and Wesley Brooks; and sister, Altha Mary (Brooks) Gregory.

Arrangements are with Dunes Memorial Chapel, 541-271-2822.
