Mr. Sweet was a son of John Sweet, born at Grosvenors Corners, June 9, 1847, and was united in marriage with Mary E. Estes, Sept. 20, 1870. He was a veteran of the Civil war, a member of Company E of the 64th regiment, in the infantry branch of the service, having enlisted in 1864, and served until the end of the war, and was mustered out at Washington, D. C., in 1865. He was in a number of the minor battles near the close of the war, and also in the siege of Petersburg. As a result of the war his sight was impaired for 12 years, and he was totally blind the past six years, but with the aid of his cane he went to the post office, the stores, a few near neighbors and also to church. Our veteran friend was quite a reader ever after the war, and when no longer able to read his devoted wife and youngest daughter, Daisy, or son, John, read a daily paper to him so that up to within a week of his death his mind was in touch with the world's great events. Thursday, March 16, 1916, from a peaceful sleep, his spirit passed on to the higher life. Funeral services were held Saturday at 1:30 p. m., conducted by his pastor, Rev. F. G. Heaxt. Among relatives from a distance were Fred Sweet and family of Syracuse; Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Fitzgerald, Floyd and Lee Sweet of Schenectady; Mr. and Mrs. George McKee of Howes Cave; J. L. Dorn of Cobleskill, and Mrs. Kate Van Derwerker and daughter, Olive, of Espserance. He is survived by his widow; five sons, three daughters, and nephews and nieces."
