Robert was the son of John H. McGowen II and his second wife Maggie McGowen.
Robert was named in honor of his uncle who perished as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War, Robert himself went on to enlist in the first World War.
Robert was one of at least eight children. Two half sisters, Annie Clyde and Winnie were from John's first marriage to Annie Laura (Robinson) McGowen. Little Annie (and her mother) both perished before Robert was born.

Susie may have been an infant daughter of John H. and his second wife Maggie which would make her Robert's full sister. It is also possible that Susie was the child of James Greer McGowen and his wife Mary Ellen (AKA Cynthia) Dean which would make Susie Robert's first cousin.
