Robert was the son of John H. McGowen II and his second wife Maggie McGowen.

Robert was named in honor of his uncle who perished as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War, Robert himself went on to enlist in the first World War.

Robert was one of at least eight children. Two half sisters, Annie Clyde and Winnie were from John's first marriage to Annie Laura (Robinson) McGowen. Little Annie (and her mother) both perished before Robert was born.

Robert's full siblings were John Fuller McGowen, Wilford McGowen, Clarence McGowen, C. Roy McGowen and Margaret McGowen.

There is a grave marker at the Dean Family Cemetery (DeSoto County) for a Susie McGowen. No dates are provided on the marker. Susie may have been an infant daughter of John H. and his second wife Maggie which would make her Robert's full sister. It is also possible that Susie was the child of James Greer McGowen and his wife Mary Ellen (AKA Cynthia) Dean which would make Susie Robert's first cousin.

At this time, not much is known of Robert's brief military service except that he was a private who served from November 5, 1918 until December 13, 1918. His draft registration card lists his physical attributes as short stature with medium build, brown eyes and straw colored hair.

Robert was a farmer by profession, working for his father on the family farm in Lake Cormorant, DeSoto County, Mississippi.
