Interpretation of: MEMORIS, Rev. Leory Fisk Beaty.
From article: Minutes of the Upper South Carolina
AnnualConference

Leory Fisk Beaty was converted and joind the Methodist Church
when he was 17 years old. In 1873, at the age of 19 he
responded to the call to preach and was liscensed by the
Marion Quarterly Conference. He was appointed first as a
Junior preacher on the Bishopville Circuit, Newberry Circuit,
1876-77, and attended Vanderbilt University for two years.
For 14 years Rev. Dr. Beaty served as minister in both
circuit and station churches. It is written that, "he
performed the dities of a pastor, loving his people with a
sincere affection."

In 1894 Dr. Beaty was appointed the assistant Sunday School
editor of the Methodist church. This appointment which he
filled for thirty-four years, took him from this ministry in
South Carolina to one which embraced the entire church. For
years he was the sole editor of the Sunday School Visitor,
and at this time was the only paper the church provided for
her young people. Because of Dr. Beaty's long years if
experience, his fine taste and artful skills, the work of the
editorial office expanded, and he was put in charge as the
make-up editor of a number of leading publications. Dr. Beaty
spoke longer than any other editor ever connected with the
Sunday School department and to a larger mulitude than any
other man of his generation.

Rev. Dr. Beaty was highly regarded by the General editors
that he worked under, by his associates at the Methodist
headquarter in Memphis, and by a host of friend and admirers
who knew him in all sections of the church. Quoting from this
article: "Our brother was a manly man, a cultured Christian
gentleman and a wise counselor." An associate in the
publishing house remarked, "If I get into serious trouble the
first man I would approach would be Dr. Beaty." It was also
said that he was a man of rare judgement, but never
judgemental his fellow man. A tenderness of heart was shown
to all who suffered, an open hand to all in need, but he
never sought applause or position. The writer states that he
has "never known a braver man." For 50 years Dr. Beaty
answered every roll call of his conference, except the two he
spent at Vanderbilt.

Rev. Dr. Beaty passed away on February 18, (doesen't give the
year, but it was probably 1923). He is buried at Spring Hill
Cemetery in Nasheville, TN.
