Thomas was born on March 29, 1948, in Alpena, the son of Fredrick and Virginia (Ford) Taber. He was raised in Alpena, graduating from Alpena High School in 1966. He then attended Alpena Community College and received an automotive degree.
He went to work for Brown Motors of Petoskey and then moved to Grand Rapids and worked for Borgman Ford for 15 years. Thomas returned to the Petoskey area and went back to work for Brown Motors as a service writer.
On Dec. 26, 1987, Thomas married Nancy Abbott in Boyne City and she survives.
He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his wife, Nancy; three children, Jessica (Gene) Dixon Jr., Allison (Michael) McCullough, and Christopher Taber; two stepchildren, Barbara (David) Hicks and Dale (Sheri) Boehm III; and by 12 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at the Stone Funeral Home of Petoskey with the Rev. David Behling officiating. Visitation will take place from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Camp Daggett, where he served on the board of directors.
