Educator and Pastor. Fifth President of the The Ohio State University. A 1878 Muskingum College graduate, he studied theology at Western Theological Seminary and became a Presbyterian pastor in 1882. He held pastorates in Iowa and Colorado, where he also took on the role of President of Longmont College, which led him into his second career as an education. He received his Ph.D. from Muskingum College in 1891 and became president of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio that same year. In 1899, he was appointed the 5th President of Ohio State and led the school into an unprecedented era of growth, transforming a small Land Grant college into one of America's major universities. During his over 25 year tenure, the school grew from 1000 to 10,000 students. The College of Education was added, and Ohio Stadium was built. He served on a number of government commissions during World War I. The Main Library at Ohio State is named in his honor, with a large 11 foot statue of him in front of the main entrance. He also served as moderator of the 138th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (1926-1927).
