James Alexander Greiner, age 89, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at the Ebeid Hospice Residence surrounded by his beloved children. Born January 22, 1922, to William and Ethel Greiner in Toledo, Jim lived all of his life in the Toledo area, with the exception of military duty during World War II. Following graduation from DeVilbiss High School in 1940, Jim was employed at The Brown, Eager & Hull Co. He was working at Willys-Overland when World War II began. He enlisted in the Navy, was stationed in the Pacific for four years, and was discharged in early 1946. He then began working at the Owens Illinois glass company where he served in various divisions for 37 years before retiring in 1983. Jim, with his parents and sister Margaret, joined the Monroe Street United Methodist Church in 1937. Jim and his wife Mary were both active in the church's Singlets Group, which brought them together. They married in 1961 and remained active members of the church throughout their lives. Jim enjoyed bowling on a church league team, and also bowled with a team of Owens Illinois employees. Love of family being central to Jim, he spent a satisfying portion of his retirement traveling with Mary to visit their children and grandchild. Much time was also spent with friends at Lakeside, Ohio, and on many wonderful bus trips throughout the country. His children enjoyed the charming and witty e-mails he would write about the weather and goings on of his life. He was an avid reader of fiction and could often be found in his comfy chair with a tasty novel cradled in his lap. He was also an excellent refinisher of antique furniture and his children appreciate the fruits of his patient touch in their homes today. A kind, quiet and patient man of impeccable character, Jim's presence was calming and light. Jim and Mary celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on October 21, 2011. Mary passed away shortly thereafter, on November 6, 2011, a loss which Jim's already weak heart could not bear. Jim is survived by his son, James C. Greiner of Chicago, IL; daughters, Nancy Musgrave of Fairfield, IA, and Patricia (Mark) Pflieger of San Diego, CA; granddaughter, Mary (Fred) Fernandez of San Diego, CA, and great-grandson, Paul Fernandez. Private interment in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Monroe Street United Methodist Church to help support the annual Concert Series.
