Martin C. Bass died at his father's, 3 miles south of Moulton, on the 18th of April, 1880, of Typhoid fever, after a protracted illness of 27 days.
He was born January 23rd, 1859, and was aged 21 years, 2 months and 25 days.
He professed faith in Christ and joined the Baptist Church in October 1873. Martin was the favorite of the entire family. The large crowd that attended his funeral shows the high esteem in which he was held by the community.
We sympathize with the family in their sad bereavement. Their hearts we know feel the loss, and their affections have received a shock, such only as can be felt by those who have lost a dutiful son and brother. But our hearts should not murmur against the Providence that has covered us with such a cloud, neither should our lips break with unavailing regrets; but we should be resigned to the will of God and learn the lessons of wisdom that such events are calculated to teach; knowing that the Lord giveth and the Lord takes away. R. T. Wear

Martin was the second born to J. Burrell Bass, III and Mary E. (nee, Martin) Bass. Martin shows up as M. C. in both the 1860 and 1870 Jefferson County, AL censuses. The 1880 Lawrence County, AL census was enumerated in June 1880 by which time he had passed away. While this memorial creator wasn't able to find Martin in Lawrence Country burial records, it is believed this is his final earthly resting place due to the number of his relatives (including his parents) who are buried in this cemetery.
