Joseph (Regimental number 52) enlisted with the 2nd Queensland Mounted Infantry Contingent and served from March 1900 to March 1901.
The Qld 2nd contingent left Brisbane on the 13th January 1900 and upon arrival in South Africa in February were immediately sent into action in the push from Perdeberg to Bloemfontein, which was taken 13th March 1900. They saw action again at Sannahs Post on 31st March, rescuing Brigadier General Broadwood and his forces from a debilitating ambush. Together with the New Zealand mounted rifles and the Canadian Dragoons, they advanced on Pretoria which was taken in early June 1900. One and a half weeks later they fought at the battle of Diamond Hill, 11th June 1900. They were then on patrol around Pretoria and saw no real action again until sent to protect the Delagoa Railway line in Belfast where they saw very stiff action from January to February. On the 31st March 1901 the 2nd contingent was sent home.
After the War, Joseph became a fisherman in the Cardwell region, Queensland, raising a family with his wife Eleanor.
