Helon Kay Ponder, 81, of Baytown, TX was born September 27, 1938 in Taft, TX and passed away Saturday, June 27, 2020. The oldest daughter of Elgin and Elon Reichenau, Kay moved with her parents to Baytown in 1942 and was a faithful member of Baptist Temple for over 70 years.

She was a proud graduate of Robert E. Lee High School class of 1957 and then attended Lee College, University of Houston and Texas A&M-Prairie View where she obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in education. She was a dedicated educator in Goose Creek CISD for 33 years, where she used her talent as a painter to teach art before spending the majority of her career teaching 1st and 2nd grade.

After her retirement, she spent time crocheting, gardening and traveling, but most importantly was the time she treasured with her family and friends. She took pride in organizing vacations, holidays and reunions that created memorable traditions to preserve the closeness of her family.

Another passion she pursued throughout her life was keeping her family connected through the generations by curating their genealogy. She spent years compiling ancestry reports and photographs, contacting relatives globally and shared her love with other families outside of her own who were seeking to learn about their family tree. She was a member of the Goose Creek chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution in Baytown; the Solomon Barrow chapter of Daughters of the Republic of Texas; the Plantagenet Society; the Jamestown Society; US Daughters of the War of 1812; the National Society of Magna Charta Dames and the Baytown Genealogical Society.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Hugo and Mada Reichenau, Carl and Frankie Wilson Russell; her parents Elgin and Elon Reichenau; son Norman Dwayne Ponder; and son-in-law Duane Smith.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years William Norman Ponder; son and daughter-in-law Rance and Rhonda Ponder; daughter and son-in-law D'Laine Smith and Gilbert Luna; daughter-in¬law Vicki (Ponder) Turnipseed and Robert Turnipseed; sister and brother-in-law Geana and Wilburn Pfeiffer; grandchildren Michelle Perry, Kelvin and Danielle (Ponder) Webster, Matthew and Veronica Ponder, Danon and Holly Ponder, and Skye Smith; great¬grandchildren Cullen Ponder, Audrey Ponder, Kevin Perry, Trevor Perry, Koda Ponder, Randall Ponder and Owen Webster; numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends; and her loyal rescue dog, Sweetie.

Her family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 2, 2020 at 10 a.m., at Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Looney officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Garth Rd. in Baytown, TX.

Serving as pallbearers will be John Paul Barclay, Jason Faulk, Danon Ponder, Matthew Ponder, Robert Turnipseed and Kelvin Webster 11. Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph Feniello, Gilbert Luna and Wilburn Pfeiffer.

In lieu of usual remembrances, contribution may be made in Kay's memory to Baytown Genealogical Society, PO Box 2486 Baytown, TX 77522-2486 or the charity of your choice.
