US Congressman. Served during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps. Elected to Represent Alabama’s 9th District in the House of Representatives, serving from 1947 to 1955. One of his key legislative acts was the sponsoring of the Battle Act, which, during the height of the Cold War, banned United States assistance to any country that did business with the Soviet Union. He unsuccessfully ran for US Senator in 1954 and for the Alabama Governorship in 1958.
