Enlisted on 5/23/1861 at Leesburg, VA., he was mustered into Company D, 8th Virginia Infantry as a Private.
Discharged 8/23/1862 due to being a Maryland citizen.
Mustered (date unknown) into Company A, Mosby's 43rd Battalion Virginia Partisan Cavalry as a Private.
POW 8/8/1863 at Middleburg, VA.; confined Ft. McHenry, MD.; transferred to Point Lookout, MD., arriving 8/23/1863; exchanged 8/5/1864; admitted 8/8/1864 into Chimborazo Hospital #3, Richmond, with chronic diarrhea.
Paroled 5/8/1865 at Winchester, VA.

Mosby's Cavalry Regiment, formerly the 43rd Battalion, was organized in December, 1864. The battalion was formed in June, 1863, with five companies, later increased to eight. The unit served behind Federal lines in Northern Virginia and was the most effective command of its kind. The enemy forces were never safe and the area became known as "Mosby's Confederacy".
