Karen became a Florida resident in 1970 and settled in Arcadia in 1972. In 1982, Karen graduated from Desoto County High School. She worked in administration at Desoto Memorial Hospital, She then taught pre-school at First Presbyterian pre-school, was an interim substitute teacher, and served the students and parents of Desoto County while a secretary at West Elementary School. Karen’s smiling face was the first contact many children and parents had with the Desoto School system.
Karen enjoyed time at the beach and boating with her family and friends. She was happiest when spending time with her children Travis, Amanda, and Ciara, who she called “her greatest treasures”. In December of 2019, she added “Nana” to her name and a new treasure to her heart when her granddaughter Emmy was born.
Karen radiated beauty from the inside out. She loved Jesus and her children fiercely. Everything Karen did, she did whole heartedly. She set the bar high as a warrior acquiring her strength through her faith. Karen’s legacy lives on through her children and their achievements, many of which were also her own.
Karen attended Calvary Baptist and Oak Hill Baptist churches with her children, worked with other citizens to create Jim’s Space, contributed to the success of many Desoto County pageants, actively participated with her children in FFA, and was an active supporter and fan of many Arcadia rodeos.
She was preceded in death by her sister Nicole Marie Gallie.
Services for Karen Mercer will take place at Joshua Creek Cemetery, Arcadia, at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 30, 2020. PONGER-KAYS-GRADY ARCADIA directing.
