Walter Michael Rowles was born on Tuesday, 16th March 1880 at Bisley, Gloucestershire, the youngest child of William and Hannah Rowles (née Webb), a ‘Labourer at a Saw Mill’.

In the 1911 census he is age 31, single, and his occupation is given as ‘Carpenter & Joiner’.

He married Grace Whyte Buchan on 14th June 1913 at Wandsworth. They had no children.
Grace died on 10th October 1974 at 36 Sunnymead Drive, Selsey, Sussex, age 84. See Probate.
She was buried on 16th October 1974 at Wandsworth Cemetery. Block 12, Plot 251.

He enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service on the 8th November 1915 and gave his occupation
as ‘Carpenter & Joiner’, a much sought after skill for aeroplane building and repair.
He was stationed at Manston, Kent, from 31st December 1916 until his discharge on the
1st November 1918. His address in 1918 is 11 Louisville Road, Balham.
He then continued his service with the Royal Air Force serving with 212 Squadron.

No. 212 Squadron was formed on 20th August 1918 from Nos 490, 557 and 558 Flights based at the seaplane station at Great Yarmouth which had been previously operated on a station basis.
It carried out anti-submarine patrols for the rest of the War and disbanded on 9th February 1920.
He was finally discharged on 30th April 1920.

In the ‘1939 Register’ he is living at 11 Louisville Road, Upper Tooting, London.
His occupation was given as ‘Master Builder’.

He died on Tuesday, 1st January 1957 at 30 Trinity Road, Upper Tooting, London, age 76.
His home address was given as 11 Louisville Road, Upper Tooting, London.
He was buried on 5th January 1957 at Wandsworth Cemetery, London. Block 12, Plot 251.
