Henrietta Herbst Wills was born in Pojewon, Poland on October 29, 1884. She was of German descent and her parents are believed to have been Heinrich Herbst and Henrietta Eicks. As a young woman, she immigrated to the U.S. on the S.S. Vaderland – sailing from Antwerp, Belgium and arriving at the Port of New York on September 21, 1904.
In Pittsburgh, PA Henrietta met John Wills, and the two were married on October 21, 1905. A short while later Henrietta and John moved to Butler, PA where they lived for 19 years and raised nine children. All attended and were members of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Butler.
In 1924, the family moved to Chicago, IL, where they were members of the Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church of South Chicago. After John’s death in 1927, Henrietta applied for and received her Certificate of Citizenship in 1930. She was an active member of the Ladies Aid Society of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Henrietta passed away in Chicago at the age of 50 on March 27, 1935. Survivors include her children Carl, Henry, Anna, Martha, Ferdinand, Emma, Clara, and Clarence.
