Gwen Hawkins, 86, passed away at UAB Hospital on June 21, 2020 surrounded by close family. She was born July 31, 1933 to James “Jim” and Bertha Hill. She married the love of her life, Billy Hawkins, on February 17, 1951 who anteceded her death on November 04, 2003. Predeceasing her death was a band of brothers and sisters, Zella & Vernon Arnold, Arvil & Macey Hill, J.V. & Fanny Hill, Bernice & Zion Hawkins, Nell & Hoyt Robertson, Irene & Oscar Speakman, Harold Hill, and Helen Hill.
Gwen is survived by her baby sister, Nevelene Miller; her daughter Rebecca Hawkins Dover & son-in-law Lee Dover; her grandchildren, Meagen & John, Brittney & Matthew, Brandie & Jonathan; and great-grandchildren; Aidan, Averee, Alyssa, Addison, Layla, Aleena, and Colton.
Gwen was a graduate at Wallace State Community College. She devoted most of her career to Beverly Healthcare & Rehab as a Registered Dietitian and retired with over 25 years of service. Her passions in life were caring for her residents through nutrition, cooking big country meals, joking and laughing with people, quilting and spending time with her family. Gwen was a Christian woman who loved Jesus and attended Church of the Highlands occasionally with her daughter. She was devoted to caring for many nieces and nephews along with her grand-daughter Meagen whom she helped raise. Her laughter, loving heart, and precious memories will live on forever in our hearts.
A visitation service will be held at 11:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at Lemley’s Chapel in Oneonta on June 26, 2020. She will be laid to rest at Dailey’s Chapel in Rosa.
Pastor Roger Robertson will officiate.
