Apfel, John Walter "Walt"
of Tempe, Arizona, was born in Phoenix, AZ on January 13, 1945 to John and Josephine Apfel, and died peacefully on September 4, 2011 in Mesa, Arizona. Walt grew up on the land that was to become Kohl's Ranch just east of Payson in the late forties and spent many of his early years hunting and fishing on the Mogollon Rim. After his father's death, he lived in Bagdad, Arizona and later Tempe Arizona. He attended Arizona State University and remained a loyal Sun Devil for the rest of his life. Walt took his family to Flagstaff, AZ in the late 70's and owned and operated Apfel Pie and Bread before selling the business and returning to Tempe in 1985 and finishing his career with the State of Arizona Department of Economic Security. Walt loved to travel to Rome, Europe, and eventually China, and then come home and share his tales with his closest friends at the Rusty Spur in Scottsdale. He is survived by his daughter Shelli Apfel of Gilbert, two sisters and three brothers, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass will take place Friday, September 23, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1800 E. Libra Drive, Tempe, Az, at 11:00 am. Interment will be private at a later date.
