Many of the area who had Dr. Benjamin "Ben" Jess Henderson as their doctor, and those who didn't, knew he was ill for some time as his appointments at the clinic grew fewer as time went on. They didn't want to accept it. Ben was an advocate for a healthy lifestyle and tirelessly imparted this to his patients. He practiced what he preached, eating properly and exercising daily.

He and his wife Audrey cherished their daily four-mile walks no matter the weather. They took long walks across the prairie near their home north of Mobridge. He took pleasure in the simple things in life such as listening to meadowlarks in the morning and watching sunsets from their back porch overlooking the river. He spent countless hours gardening and maintaining his trees.

Always active, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, skiing, white water rafting. He was a devoted husband and father, never missing one of his sons' activities whether it was a grade school music contest, track meet, football or basketball game.

But the leukemia he had battled so long finally won. Dr. Ben died at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls on Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, at the age of 65 and a day after their 43rd wedding anniversary.

Ben was born in Dupree on Nov. 19, 1941, to Eugene H. and Jane (Miller) Henderson. His first home was a ranch 35 miles south of Dupree on Cherry Creek in Ziebach County. The family later moved to a farm/ranch southeast of Dupree. He attended the rural Whittier School through the eighth grade, the last four of which he was the only student in his grade.

Growing up, he was active in football, basketball and track, which spawned a lifelong interest in sports. Ben graduated from Dupree High School in 1959. After attending SDSU and NSU, Ben spent two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany.

On Aug. 16, 1964, Ben married his long time sweetheart, Audrey Rohrer, in Faith. They moved to Belle Fourche, where Audrey held a teaching position and Ben graduated from BHSC in 1966 with a major in Biology. He held numerous jobs growing up that included working as a ranch hand in high school. During his college years, he added to the family income by working the night shift at a Texaco station, picking potatoes and working in a grocery store.

After spending a year at USD in graduate studies, Ben entered the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in 1971. He then was commissioned as a Captain in the U. S. Army and accepted a one-year rotating internship at Brook Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. The following three years were spent in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Their oldest son Travis was born in Kansas City and Josh was born in Cleveland. In July of 1975, Ben brought his family to Mobridge where he was employed and later became a partner in the Mobridge Medical Clinic. He dedicated all 32 years of his professional career to serving the health care needs of north central South Dakota and supporting the Mobridge Regional Hospital. While many community hospitals were being taken over or closed, he fought hard to help keep MRH open and independent.

He was very fond of his longtime colleague, Dr. Leonard Linde. Often the only two physicians at the Mobridge Medical Clinic, the pair alternated calls every other day and every other weekend for many years.

He served on the Dakota Care Board of Directors, and the MRH Board of Directors as well as being delegate, counselor and NW District president of the South Dakota State Medical Association, and president and secretary/treasurer of the South Dakota Osteopathic Association. He was a clinical professor for the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, willingly sharing his knowledge and skills with numerous pre-med, medical and mid level students. He became Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1976, and became a Fellow of the American college of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine in 1995.

Dr. Henderson was Advanced Trauma Life Support Certified and was an instructor for Advanced Cardiac Life Support, giving classes to healthcare providers throughout the area. In 2004, he received the Laureate Award which honors those Fellows and Masters of the American College of Physicians who have demonstrated by their example, conduct and abiding commitment to excellence in medical care.

Ben was honored by his co-workers when he was named Employee of the Year at MRH in 2006. He was a certified Aviation Medical Examiner, and enjoyed flying his plane to the satellite clinic in Timber Lake.

His quiet, reassuring and pleasant manner, with his skills, drew the respect of patients and colleagues alike.

Ben loved the outdoors. Some of his favorite memories were the adventures he shared with his family on summer vacations in which they pulled their pop-up camper throughout the west. He enjoyed backpacking and one of his favorite trips was hiking rim to rim across the Grand Canyon. Other summer vacations he and his family spent whitewater rafting on numerous rivers in the Rocky and Cascade Mountain Ranges. He and Audrey went skiing in Montana and cross country skiing on the prairies. He especially enjoyed his annual west river deer hunts with his sons.

He leaves his wife, Audrey of Mobridge; his sons, Dr. Travis (Misti) Henderson of Mobridge and Dr. Josh (Dr. Rose) Henderson of Canfield, Ohio; brothers, Gene (Elsie) Henderson of Dupree and Harley (Terri) Henderson of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren Kayleigh, Lauren, Landyn, Charley and Shane Benjamin; his brother-in-law Roger (Jan) Rohrer of Lead; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and his co-workers.

Ben's parents, Eugene and Jane Henderson, preceded him in death.

Services for Dr. Ben were this morning, Wednesday, Aug. 22, at United Congregational Church in Mobridge with the Rev. Keith Kraft officiating. Eulogies were given by Benj Stoick, Dr. Leonard Linde and Darrell Gill.

Casketbearers were Darrell Gill, Dr. Linde, Jim Curran, Mike Kuck, Dale Henderson, Bill Henderson and Jack Freeman. Dr. Robert Marciano, Lyle Kemnitz and Brent Kemnitz were ushers.

Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery at Mobridge with military honors by the Parker-Browder American Legion Post. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge was in charge of arrangements.
