Harvey William Webb (May 26, 1925 - June 12, 2020)
Harvey William Webb, WWII veteran, 95 years of age, of Cedar Hill (formerly Denison), Texas, went to be with the Lord on June 12, 2020, at a Dallas hospital, surrounded by family.
Harvey was born on May 26, 1925, the son of Nora and William Ivy Webb of Denison, Texas.
He worked for the Katy Railroad before entering the U.S. Army in 1943 at the age of 18. He was assigned to Company A, 382nd Infantry Regiment, 96th Infantry Division, and fought on Leyte, Southern Philippines, and Okinawa. For his numerous injuries and bravery, he was awarded three Purple Heart Medals (turned down a fourth) as well as the Bronze Star Medal. He was discharged January 11, 1946.
When he returned home, he joined the Civil Air Patrol, and obtained his pilot’s license.
Harvey married his high school sweetheart, Pauline (Polly) Long, on July 5, 1947, after he returned from WWII. They lived in Olympia, WA, for some time, but were true Texans, and came back to live in Sulphur Springs, Bonham, and finally Denison, Texas. They welcomed their daughter, Deborah, on November 14, 1953. He took excellent care of his family with successful careers in home building and insurance sales. They enjoyed many years of fun times, especially at Lake Texoma with Harvey’s late in-laws, Ralph and Cleo Long. Harvey never really stopped being an insurance man. Polly passed away February 14, 1987 after a battle with cancer. They were married 40 years.
He met recently widowed Louise Billingsley at square dance classes, and asked her to be his dance partner. They eloped and got married in Nevada on July 14, 1989, and he embraced all her family as his own. They spent their senior years together traveling, lots of road trips, and 15 cruises. They moved from Denison to Cedar Hill, Texas, in 2008 to be closer to all the kids and grandkids. Harvey and Louise loved to read books, and after they got their Kindle electronic readers, they were never without them. They both loved their times spent with the kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.
Louise passed away on September 1, 2014, after a long illness.
Later in life, while he was Commander of the Texas chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, he led the successful project to name Interstate 35 the Purple Heart Trail, in honor of all the Texans killed in action.
He enjoyed attending the annual military reunions of his 96th Infantry Division. And after they became available, he never used any other postage stamp except Purple Heart.
Harvey was a good Christian, loving, honest, kind, and generous man. He enjoyed his independence, living in his home until his death.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Pauline (Polly) Long Webb February 14, 1987, his sister Narcadean Webb Buckner December 2008, his second wife V. Louise Mason Webb September 1, 2014, his mother-in-law Myra Grace Mason (Louise’s mother) January 31, 2008, and a son-in-law T. Michael Hutson (Vynita’s husband) January 7, 2002.
Harvey is survived by his daughter, Dr. Deborah Webb and her wife, Katherine Parsons-Webb (Austin, Texas), his daughter, Vynita Hutson (Arlington, Texas), his son, Rick Billingsley (Arlington, Texas), and his daughter, Kelly Clark and her husband, Mark Clark (Cedar Hill, Texas). His grandchildren are Ashley, Robert, Jordan, Michael, Robin, Rachael, Christopher, Riley, Zachary, Patrick, and Cody. Great grandchildren are Penelope, Verona, Maven, Sayde, Kegan, Cali, DeCota, Penelapie, and Payton. Also survived by nephew, Marty Long, and great nephew, Ethan Long. And many, many friends who will miss him dearly. Harvey was a beloved member of First Baptist Church in Cedar Hill, Texas.
A service of Remembrance and Celebration was held there on June 16, 2020. He had planned everything for us, right down to a catered party for his friends and family.
He chose to be cremated and suggested in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to First Baptist Church of Cedar Hill, or non-profit PLANCTX, Inc. of Austin.
