Lieutenant Commander Everett Lester Nix, USN retired from the Navy on April 30, 1956 after 29 years of service. He was awarded the silver star in December of 1942 and commended by the head of the executive department for his performance of duty in actual combat on the U.S. Smith fighting in The Battle of Santa Cruz. He served on the U.S. Arizona until not long before Pearl Harbor, prior to his transfer to the U.S. Smith. He was born in Carrollton, Georgia, but spent much of his life in the Long Beach, California area. His mother's name was Flora Jane Swann and his father's name was Augustus Edgar Nix. He was married to Emma Arvella Lane.

A Japanese bomber crashed into her during the battles off Santa Cruz, leaving her forward section a mass of smoke and flames. Through heroic efforts, her crew, including Nix, was able to save her and bring her safely back to Pearl Harbor.
