US Navy Veteran (1896-1899) Spanish American War. During the Spanish American War he was an ordinary seaman on USFS New York, flagship of Admiral William Sampson.

A native of Caribou, Aroostook, County, Maine, born to George and Julia (nee Nales) Gosline, he enlisted on December 9, 1896 under that name and was honorably discharged on November 1, 1899, having served on USS Wabash, New York and Franklin. Following discharge, he settled at Taunton City, Bristol County, Massachusetts, and worked as a fireman. He married 16 year old Mabel Ermina Carter (born March 1883 at Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts) at Brockton, MA on January 13, 1900. Per the 1900 Census they were borders living with William Duvol and his family. Per the 1905 Taunton city directory he was working as a fireman and she was working as a waitress at Taunton.

Sometime after that and before 1918, George and Mabel Carter's marriage ended, George dropped his last name Gosline for "Hopkins" and moved to the Bay area in Northern California. Per his World War I draft registration, George was married to "Mabel Hopkins" and living in Richmond, CA where he worked for Standard Oil. However, the Mabel he was then married to was probably Mabel Dorothy Hedlen, a California native born in 1886. Interestingly, Mabel Hedlen in August 1905 at Portland, OR, entered into a "surprise marriage" (to her parents) with Harry Eiek-Elberger, a Southern Pacific railroad worker, per a contemporary news article.

Presently, no 1910 Census record has been found for either of the two "Mabels" or George, which likely would answer questions about the gap between the 1905 Taunton, Mass City directory and George's WW I draft registration 13 years later. By the 1920 Census, George and Mabel (nee Hedlen) had four children, the oldest born about 1906. They lived at 945 University Ave. in Berkley, CA and he gave his occupation as auto mechanic. It can't be said with certainly which of the four children were George's, since no birth certificates have been found at present. Any or all could have been Harry Elberger's children with Mabel Hedlen. Harry Elberger and Mable Hedlen either divorced or he died, certainly plausible as he was a railroad worker, apart from natural causes.

By the 1930 Census, George and Mabel were living on Sunset Blvd, in the Eden township of Alameda County, and he gave his occupation as field clerk for Pacific Gas and Electric. George died at Hayward, CA in 1943 at age 65, survived by Mabel and their four children. Mabel died in 1953 and her remains were handled at the "Berkley Crematory".
