Mary Catherine Belluomini DeWittof Alvin, Texas passed away on Satuday, June 20, 2020 at 11:11 at Seton Central in Austin, Texas. She was surrounded by her loving family in person and on Zoom.
Catherine was born “BOI” on September 10, 1934, living in Galveston until her husband established his medical practice in Alvin in 1963. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Alvin, Texas. Catherine passed away in Austin, Texas where she lived close to her two daughters and grandsons for the past 2 years. She is preceded in death by her parents: Giuseppe and Regina Belluomini of Galveston and her sister Margaret Mary Knopp.
Catherine attended Ursuline Academy in Galveston after which she attended Incarnate Word University in San Antonio before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin where she graduated with honors earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Therapy. After putting her profession on hold for several years of rearing her children she went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology from the University of Houston. She also went to summer school in Minnesota to learn about dyslexia and how to treat it before it was even recognized as a disorder in the State of Texas.
Catherine found great joy in her profession as a Language and Learning Specialist and had a successful private practice from 1983 to 2003 when she retired. She served many schools in the greater Alvin area and attracted students from miles around the Gulf Coast Area. She was an early advocate and service provider of Head Start of Alvin and Angelton. She loved helping kids who were struggling in school and especially those others had given up on; helping them graduate from high school and go on to college. She also helped victims of stroke and head injuries regain their ability to communicate. It is an unusual trip to Alvin when a story is not shared about how Catherine helped someone.
Catherine was an active member of the community. She was a past President of Alvin Chamber of Commerce elected by the board, and president of the Alvin Community College Foundation, University of Houston Alumni Association and a founding member and officer of Soroptimist. She was on the Board of the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and AAUW (American Association of University Women) an early organization advocating equity for women. Catherine was a member of the Aglaian Study Club, Alvin Museum Society, and Alvin Mothers Club.
She had a knack for fundraising, helping to start the Tour de Braz bicycle ride. She brought in excellent speakers for the Chamber of Commerce, notably famous firefighter Red Adair, Rangers owner George W. Bush, and Houston Oilers Coach Jack Pardee. She also chaired the 1st gala for the Austin Museum Society, which was probably the first gala in Alvin.
When not busy with her practice or advocating for the community of Alvin, Catherine enjoyed reading, watching movies, theater and music programs, traveling, visiting museums and spending time with her grandchildren.
Catherine is survived by her loving and caring husband of 61 years, Joseph Cornell DeWitt; daughters: Deborah DeWitt and Lisa DeWitt Fuka, son, Robert David DeWitt, three grandchildren, and numerous relatives and friends.
