She graduated from Harper High School in Jackson, AL with the Class of 1968. She attended Bishop State Community College and the University of South Alabama. She graduated in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Later, Gladys received her Master’s in Elementary Education from William Carey College.
After graduation, Gladys moved to Moss Point, MS working in the Ocean Springs School District. After 35 years of service, she retired as an educator from the Pascagoula School District in 2006. She loved children and loved teaching. After retirement, she would also substitute for teachers that needed to take a extended leave of absence. She was active with the Pascagoula Senior Center. She received joy by participating in their chorus and line dancing group. Gladys took delight in their performances. Recently, she started engaging in activities with the Moss Point Senior Center. Participating in the monthly Retired Teachers’ Luncheon provided her with laughter and enjoyment. She received gratification serving the community by volunteering at the Mississippi voting polls.
Mrs. Coleman lived a purpose driven life rooted in giving. She was a deeply devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, godmother, cousin, niece, and friend. As a faithful Christian, she was very active at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She was a member of the program committee and Committee #2, while also being affiliated with the Widowed Women of Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She also served as a Youth Department Supervisor, youth counselor, and vacation bible school teacher.
Mrs. Coleman was married to the late Alfred Edward Coleman Sr. for 42 years, and to this union, 2 children were born.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and her five siblings: Nanny Nash, Bessie Nash, Kathy Nash, Aberdean Nash and Georgia Moss.
She leaves to cherish her memories her loving children, Monica Ann Coleman Stallworth (Michael) of Mobile, AL and Alfred Edward Coleman Jr of Houston, TX; 5 grandchildren: Maleah, Kethan, Moya, Matthew, and Harrison; 3 sisters: Ruth Richardson of Mobile, AL, Jessie Pugh of Toddtown, AL and Mattie Taylor of Jackson, AL; 3 brothers: Frank Nash Jr (Geraldine) of Jackson, AL, Thomas Nash (Mamie) of Frisco City, AL and Michael Nash (Edna) of Moss Point, MS; 11 aunts: Thelma Randle of Mobile, AL, Nannie Mosley of Mobile, AL, Ruth “Sister” Darrington Adams, Pearlie P. Williams of Chicago, IL, Irene Ramsay of New Orleans, LA, Sarah Haggerty (Will) of Humble, TX, Mary Batts of Houston, TX, Rosetta Briggs (Edward) of Vancleave, MS, Olivia Cooper of Waukean, IL, Florrita Fairley of Virginia Beach, VA and Augustine Payton of Vancleave, MS; one uncle: George “Red” Darrington of Montgomery, AL. She has one brother-in-law: Marvin Coleman (Cecilia) of Chicago, IL and a devoted godson: Derrick Rogers (Pam) of Sanford, FL. She had a devoted nephew that she raised like her own, Darius Payton of Moss Point, MS and a best friend who she loved dearly, Saundra Yelder of Grand Bay, AL. She has a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
