Dorothy Frances (Parker) Chambers, age 97 of Fredonia, passed away June 20, 2020 at St Francis Hospital in Wichita, KS

Dorothy was born on a farm about halfway between Fall River and Coyville on September 17, 1922 to Ruel Wicker “Bob” and Mary Helen (Johnson) Parker. She grew up in the house that her great-grandfather built in 1895 and continued to live there until her father lost the farm during the Great Depression in 1939. She graduated from Fall River High School in 1941. During high school, she took normal training and began teaching in rural schools the following year. To renew her teaching certificate, she took classes each summer at Pittsburg Teachers College.

While teaching in Benedict, she met Doug Chambers. On June 5, 1955, Dorothy married Joseph Douglas Chambers at the Methodist Church in Fredonia, KS. They were married until Doug’s death in 1985. They had two daughters, Mary and Charlotte.

In addition to teaching school, Dorothy helped Doug run their restaurant and gas station on the six-mile corner for 5 years and a restaurant in Coyville for one year. After Fall River school district consolidated with Fredonia, Dorothy retired from teaching and began working at the Kansas Bank Note where she continued to work until she retired in 1988.

After she retired, she volunteered many places including the blood mobile, hospital auxiliary, and Wilson County Conservation District. She was an active member at the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia and a member of the United Methodist Women.

She loved camping and gardening. Many evenings were spent with friends and family playing cards and games. She enjoyed reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, creating canvas decorations, and embroidering. She also loved to travel with family and friends.
