Mr. Kane was born in Argusville in the town of Carlisle and was raised in the Canojoharie area. He graduated from Sharon Springs Central School in 1945 and served in the Army infantry from 1951 to 1953 in Germany during the Korean War. After his discharge, he began working as a carpenter's apprentice for the former L.R. Chase Lumber Co. and built homes in the Central Bridge area.
Mr. Kane was appointed acting postmaster of the Central Bridge post office in 1958 and was later sworn in as the postmaster on Sept. 21, 1959. He retired from that position in 1989. He was a former member of the Tri-County Postmasters Assoc. and was a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States.
He was a member of the Schoharie Central School Board from 1964 to 1974 and was currently a commissioner for the Central Lighting District. He was also a member of the Central Bridge Fire Dept and rescue squad.
Kane was a past president of the Schoharie County Bowling Assoc. and was the secretary of the Twilight Bowling League in Schoharie and the International Bowling League in Cobleskill.
He was the manager of the E.A. Howard's Little League team, was Cub master of Pack 46 and was a square dance caller for several country bands in the area.
Kane was a member of the Central Bridge Methodist Church and was chairmen of the trustees at one time.
Survivors include his wife Shirley Kilmer Kane, whom he married Feb. 3, 1951; one son Bernard E. Kane of Wareham, Mass; one daughter, Bonnie Kane Lewis of Schoharie; his mother, Marjorie Rector Kane of Canojoharie; two brothers, Everett Kane of Mt. Vision, Otsego County and Herbert Kane of Queensbury; two sisters, Harriet Tallmadge of Glen and Lila MacPhail of Ames and two granddaughters.
