Sis. Hattie Mae Smith was born in Dawson, Terrell County, GA, on October 11, 1929, to the late Rossie Williams Smith and the late Leroy Shannon, Sr.

Her upbringing was in a Christian home, where she was taught that Jesus was the center of her life. At an early age, she accepted Christ and became a member of Beulahland Missionary Baptist Church, Dawson, GA. She believed that the church was within you, and she carried it wherever she went. She never met a stranger and believed in treating others the way she wanted them to treat her.

Her education was received in the independent, segregated church schools of Terrell County, GA.

Sis. Smith was employed as a domestic worker for Mr. C. and Mrs. Carolyn Rogers and also the nanny for their son, Ronald ‘Chap’ Rogers. She was employed with them until her retirement. After which, she maintained communication with Ronald, his wife, Susan, and daughter, Molly Ostrander.

Her family lovingly referred to her as MaDear and Grant. She was an avid reader who enjoyed reading the Dawson News and the Albany Herald, along with watching the daily news in order to keep up with the current events of her city, state, and country. The Dollar Tree was her favorite store; she truly believed she could find the best bargains for just a single dollar. MaDear was often seen with family around town paying her bills and at the post office picking up her mail. In her leisure, she enjoyed watching The Young and the Restless, The Price is Right, Wrestling, Law & Order, and BET. Additionally, she enjoyed keeping up with the latest fashion trends of her grandchildren. In her younger days, she loved to dance.

On Thursday, March 26, 2020, the legacy of Hattie Mae Smith abruptly came to an end. She lived a long and productive life to the seasoned age of 90. For several years, she held the title of “The Oldest Living Descendant of the Williams Family.” She was blessed to be clothed in her right mind until her demise, and we thank God for granting us these wonderful years and memories.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her four siblings, Beatrice Bagley, Eddie Lee ‘Koot’ Daniels, Rosa Lee Clark, and Jimmy Lee ‘Honey’ Smith; and a grandson, Wilson Tramaine Tolbert.
