First World War

Hallett Archibald Trefry was the son of Augustus Campbell Trefry (1865-1930) and Elizabeth Ann (Jeffery) Trefry (1872-1960). Brother of Mayme Gladys (DOBD 18 Mar 1894), Josephine Teressa (26 Aug 1896 - 25 Mar 2001), and William Caleb Trefry (11 Aug 1907- 15 Oct 1959) who served as a Corporal with the West Nova Scotia Regiment / Canadian Infantry Corps during the Second World War.

Hallett was wounded in action during the fierce fighting at Passchendaele, suffering delayed affects from a mustard gas shell. He was sent to No. 3 Station Hospital at Rouen, France on the 2 November 1917. Where as he would be moved around from one hospital to another until he returned to Canada onboard the SS Olympic arriving at Halifax on 13 December 1918. He was taken on strength at No. 6 Depot at Halifax and assigned to the Casualty Company; discharged from service on the 21 January 1919. The injury he sustained at Passchendaele would go on to to ultimately thus directly contribute to his death at the young age of thirty-six.

After returning home Hallett and Celina lived on Ryerson Court in Yarmouth. Hallett died on April 4, 1935 at the age of thirty-six, his death attributed to his wartime service after being gassed at Passchendaele. Celina never remarried and raised their two sons, Victor Augustus and Donald on her own. Victor went on to serve his county in uniform for twenty-two years with the Royal Canadian Airforce.

Hallett Archibald Trefry: 262658 Private, 85th Battalion / Nova Scotia Highlanders / Canadian Infantry Corps / Canadian Expeditionary Force, Died of Illness Apr 1935 / Yarmouth / Nova Scotia, Age 36, Not included in the Canadian First World War Book of Remembrance

Important note: An appropriate and thus fitting recognition would be, acknowledgement of his sacrifice to service. As he should be forever named amongst the First World War Casualties upon the Yarmouth Cenotaph. Hence Edward's name does not appear on the Yarmouth War Memorial..
