HAT ON ENGINE TELLS OF DEATH
Killing of Woman Causes Recommendation For Safety Gates

PITTSBURG, May 21, --- As the result of an inquest into the death of Mrs. Mary K. McAuliff, aged 53 years, who resided at 517 Fourth street, Braddock, and was killed Tuesday, May 12, at Copeland Station by being struck by a fast passenger train, the coroner’s jury recommended that the Pennsylvania railroad place gates at the crossing.

William H. Rice, of Altoona, the fireman, testified that the crew did not know they had struck the woman until they found her hat on the pilot of the engine. The engineer, J.J. Murphy, then stopped the train and found that Mrs. McAuliff was badly injured. She was hurried to the Braddock General hospital, where she died fifteen minutes later.

It is said that many persons have been killed at this dangerous crossing and several times the coroner’s jury has recommended that gates be erected.
