Catherine (Kathleen) Christina (Curran) McCormick, 81, a long-time resident of Cranston and Providence passed away
Kathleen was born on March 7, 1939 to Patrick Cornelius Curran and Katherine (Buckley) Curran of Maulin, Cahersiveen, County Kerry, Ireland. Kathleen emigrated to the United States in 1960 where she was sponsored by her beloved Aunt Mary.
Kathleen was known by her family and friends in Ireland as Cait. Her Aunt thought that her Gaelic name would be too confusing for people in the States, so the name “Kathleen” was born
She worked for many years for the President of Brown University as a nanny and housekeeper. She also held various positions in her life including a bookkeeper for the Department of Human Services for the State of Rhode Island
In 1966, She met the love of her life, Ronald (Ronnie) McCormick while at a wedding of mutual friends. They Wed November 9, 1968. In no time at all they had three children. Ronnie and Kathleen spent 50 years together before his passing in December 2016. When they vowed- for richer or poorer, in sickness or in health, they meant it.
Kathleen, Ronnie and family had a wonderful life together, through good and challenging times, they always managed to laugh every single day.
Kathleen loved people. Everyone was always welcome in her home, and they were going to eat something whether they liked it or not. She loved with all her heart and made people feel like they were her people. We knew that when she went grocery shopping, she wouldn’t return for several hours because she held conversations with everyone in the store up and down the aisles.
Kathleen was a member of the Ireland’s 32 and the Irish Ceilidhe Club. She loved to socialize, dance and meet with her large circle of friends. She hosted many Providence police officers in her home when Ronnie would spring impromptu visits, sometimes at all hours of the night. She also was a lifelong parishioner of St. Matthew’s Church, Cranston. She enjoyed spending time at her beach house in Narragansett during the summers and would often take trips to Ireland to visit her family and stay in her house that she loved in Killarney.
She is predeceased by her soulmate, Retired Police Sgt Ronnie McCormick, her parents, and siblings Noreen Curran, Eileen O’Sullivan and Paddy Curran of County Kerry Ireland and Sean Curran, of Providence RI and her sister-in-law Jackie (McCormick) Miller of Warwick RI
She is survived by her three devoted children John Patrick McCormick, Kerry Kathleen McCormick, Mickalean Joseph McCormick and his wife Kate Callan McCormick, two cherished grandchildren Reiley McCormick-Keck and Elsie McCormick-Keck and her sister Joan Curran of Cahersiveen, Co Kerry Ireland. She also leaves behind several dearly loved in-laws, Margaret Curran, Pat O’Sullivan, Millie (McCormick) Donth, Gerry (McCormick) Murray, Patricia (McCormick) Donovan and her husband John. Kathleen also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews, and a few friends of her children, who she considered to be kids of her own, and often called “my other kids”, and a community of loving friends.
Kathleen lived a life devoted to her family and the people she loved. She laughed often and her laugh would fill a room. She cared for her husband for many years, never letting him slow down despite health issues. Anyone who knew her, loved her, and she loved them right back.
Over the past few years, she battled Alzheimer’s and was a recent resident of Briarcliff Manor in Johnson, where she received wonderful loving care and was upbeat and still laughing to the very end.
Kathleen McCormick was one of a kind and she will be greatly missed.
Visitation Tuesday from 4 – 7 pm in the Russell J. Boyle and Son Funeral, 142 Centerville Rd., Warwick. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 am. Burial will be private.
