James Alfred Stanford was born in Cleburne, TX, but about 1912 the family moved to Waco where James was reared. After completing his public school courses he entered Baylor Univ., receiving his A.B. degree there and later obtaining his Law Degree at Cumberland Univ.
He was active in his practice of law, and in 1925 was elected Assistant District Attorney at Waco, holding this office until 1931, in which year he was appointed Assistant Attorney General of Texas.
In 1936 he returned to private practice, but was elected State Representative 1941-1945. In 1945 he became a State Senator.
