Richard Cannon Anderson: “Crazy Richard,” the Harley ridin’, comforter of lost children, professional BBQer, and best lemonade makin’ Grandpa ever, passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2015, after years of battling COPD.
We learned many valuable lessons from Richard in his 66 years of life. Among them: Never let a child go away without a candy or a soda in hand. People - especially teenagers, are worth giving a second chance. Dogs are people too. You can be stubborn until your mother takes your hands, looks you in the eye, and tells you what you should do. You might be tough but you can still cry when your wife, kids and especially when your grandkids make you proud. You’re never too busy to help someone. And there is no such thing as overboard when it comes to Christmas decorations for the grandkids.
As Richard said, “When I was a teenager I would get into trouble for driving fast and staying out late...and when I joined the police force, I got paid for it.” Officer Anderson tried to help and lift others whenever possible. He loved his loyal friends on the force including his k-9 partners Rusty and Robby.
After Richard retired from the police force, and before he got sick, he kept busy by delivering cars for Broadway Ford; delivering prescription drugs in Southeast Idaho; BBQing; traveling; and taking the grandkids for ice cream on his Harley.
Richard was born to Cannon and Barbara Smith Anderson on May 15, 1949 in St. Anthony, Idaho. He was the second of 5 children. He grew up in Idaho Falls and graduated from Skyline High School. After serving an LDS mission in Australia, Richard married Janet Davis in 1972. They welcomed their two boys, Kenny and Mike, into the world. He and Janet later divorced. In 1978 Richard married Andrea Grant and they have been together since, almost 38 years. Their home was always open to family and friends whether you just wanted to stop in for a drink and a laugh, or if you needed a place to stay for a while.
Richard is survived by his wife Andi; his siblings Linda Beal of West Jordan, Utah, Judy Allen (David) of Hyde Park, Utah, David Anderson (Jennifer) of Providence, Utah, and Sue Zan Hammerland of Salt Lake City, Utah; his sons Kenneth C (Shanti) of Idaho Falls and Michael Richard (Brandy) of Nibley, Utah; and Grandkids Michelle, Jake, Josh, Nate, Mason, Zach, and Lyndsi.
The family will receive friends at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls, on Thursday, August 20, 2015 between 11:30 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. with an Idaho Falls Police Department Honor Guard presentation at 1:00 P.M.
