Obituary: Barbara Hyde

Barbara Treadway Hyde, 83, passed away at the home she shared with her daughter and son-in-law, Charla and Steve Conway.

A Knoxville native, she was the daughter of Bess and Robert Treadway. She was born April 17, 1936. Barbara retired after 30 years of service from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she served in several administrative posts, including testing coordinator and counseling center assistant. In her various roles at UTC, Barbara supported the work of faculty and staff colleagues while helping hundreds of students attain their educational goals. It was through her efforts to help and care for students that she truly found her calling.

A graduate of UT Knoxville, Barbara was active in campus life and was a member of the Pride of the Southland Marching Band Majorette Corps. After graduating, she made Chattanooga her home. She was an animal lover and advocate who trained and showed dogs professionally, especially her beloved German Shepherds. Her passion for helping students and their families, as well as her love of sports, led her to volunteer with Coach Robert High’s Brainerd High School basketball program. For several years she assisted with a wide range of activities in support of the team and was one of their biggest fans. Barbara’s quick wit, her care for others and willingness to take on new challenges were qualities that endeared her to all who loved her. She will truly be missed by her family and friends. Barbara was of the Catholic faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bess and Robert Treadway and her father-in-law, Arlie Hyde.

She is survived by her daughters, Charla Hyde (Steve) Conway and Robyn Hyde; Godson, Daryl Yarbrough; grandchildren, Ashley and Justin Lumpkin, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Barbara’s memory to the McKamey Animal Center, 4500 N. Access Road, Chattanooga., TN 37415, mckameyanimalcenter.org.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a later date. Arrangements by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue, 423-622-9995
