Mable attended Call County Line School. After marriage, she worked at numerous places as a cook and housekeeper, but later became one of the first women day laborers at Silsbee’s Kirby Sawmill in the 1960’s. Mable was elected as union representative in 1973, a position she held until the mill closed down in 1986. After that, she worked for The Beaumont Enterprise and Goliad House in Beaumont, Texas for numerous years before retiring.
Mable loved sewing, baking, cooking, planting gardens, and caring for her farm animals. She enjoyed seeing her children and grandchildren at her house. Mable said she always slept best when there was a loud crowd; she was used to a house full of family and love.
Mable was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Leona Westbrooks; her husband, Elisha McMahon, Jr.; one daughter, Gwendolyn Elam; one grandson, Cleyon McMahon; seven brothers, a set of twin boys who died at birth, Booker (Bo) Westbrooks, Cecil Westbrooks, Riley Westbrooks, Walter (Gene) Westbrooks, and Paul Westbrooks; two sisters, Ida Gaines and Laverne Cleaver.
Mable is survived by six daughters, Patricia Butler (Clyde) and Cynthia Collins (Orris) of Silsbee, Texas, Brenda Thrower-Page and Kimberly McMahon of Houston, Texas, Sharon Boykin (Willie) of Cade, Louisiana, Tima Roberts of Humble, Texas; three sons, William McMahon (Cynthia) and Brad McMahon of Houston, Texas, and Elisha McMahon III (Joann) of Silsbee, Texas; one sister Lois Straughter (Sam) of Humble, Texas; two brothers, Elzie Westbrooks (Debra) of Dallas, Texas, and Jerry Westbrooks of Buna, Texas; two aunts, Ida Mae Lavergne of Houston, Texas, and Eddie Gay of Dallas, Texas. She also leaves behind twenty grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and thirteen great-great grandchildren.
